Ned Toolkit
Prototype under review. This draft describes the intended tools. Compatibility, feature testing and Ned integration are still in progress. It is not installation guidance for a supported release.
Ned Toolkit brings together the functionality of the retired Ned Alerts and Ned Activity Notice plugins, alongside course editing and administration tools. Automatic migration of old settings or notification history has not been established.
Find Toolkit
In the prototype, administrators can open Site administration → Plugins → Local plugins → Ned Toolkit, or search administration for Toolkit. The entry opens Course Tweaks. Access to each tool depends on Moodle permissions.
Course Tweaks
Choose the required switches and save changes. These switches are not enabled by the supplied fresh-install routine.
| Setting | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Alternative Activity Description | Add an optional second description to an activity or resource and choose whether to display it on the course page. |
| Selected-field user downloads | Choose the user fields included in a bulk download and save personal field-selection presets. |
| Last Modified Date Control | Hide the last-modified label when viewing Page resources in covered courses, without changing the stored date or the Page appearance setting. |
| Return-to-Course Position | Restore the earlier scroll position when returning to a course page. |
Activity tags and bulk editing
Select a course, filter the list and select the activities to change. The tag tools add or remove tags from selected items. Completion and restriction editors provide bulk workflows and templates. Confirm the selected activities and rule groups before saving.
Changing completion rules can affect existing learner progress. Completed activities require explicit unlocking before a saved change can reset progress. Opening the editor alone does not reset completion. Try templates on disposable activities of the matching type before changing real courses.
Popup Notifications
Create a notification with a name, type, message, page scope, conditions, repetition/frequency and dismissal settings. Types supply the icon, title and colours. Preview the notification before enabling it. The installer supplies a disabled example.
Dismissal is recorded separately for each user. Choose the intended repetition and frequency, and test with matching and nonmatching users before enabling a message broadly. The pilot includes keyboard dismissal, small screens and accessibility checks.
Ned Hub and course coverage
This candidate requires Ned Hub 2026100603 or later. Administrators must explicitly select covered courses in Ned Hub. Course tools and notification delivery also require the appropriate Moodle permissions and valid Hub runtime access. Removing coverage stops Toolkit behaviour without deleting saved course content or Toolkit configuration.
Permissions
Editing teachers and managers receive the prototype's course-level tag and alternative-description capabilities. Notification management, course tweaks, health and diagnostics use dedicated administrative capabilities. Bulk user download requires Moodle's user-update capability. Completion and restriction editing depend on Moodle activity-management permissions.
Privacy and diagnostics
Toolkit stores popup configuration, per-user popup state and personal download presets in Moodle. User exports should contain only the fields needed for the task and must be handled appropriately after download.
AI error diagnosis and Globalping network tracing are deferred from the first release and are unavailable in this candidate. Connection-speed checks use the Moodle site's own diagnostic endpoints.
Compatibility and availability
The prototype declares Moodle 4.5 as its minimum. Automated review runs cover Moodle 4.5 and 5.1, including original-prototype upgrade, uninstall cleanup and reinstall. Development-site verification, final release integration and client pilot acceptance are still required. This page does not announce a supported release.
Troubleshooting
- If a tool is missing, check its feature setting, Moodle capabilities and Ned Hub course coverage.
- Before repeating a bulk action, check the course, filters and selected activities.
- A successful diagnostic result does not establish that every Moodle or Ned feature works.
